Can PET map the dynamics of angiogenesis?
The first ever PET imaging agent that tracks the process of angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels in the body, is being evaluated in a clinical study at Hammersmith Hospital in London, UK. Developed by GE Healthcare, the agent is an RGD peptide labelled with a fluorine-18 isotope. The fluorine gives it the same half-life as fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG), the radiopharmaceutical most often used for clinical PET imaging.
