Free-electron lasers: ready to shine?
A free-electron laser (FEL) is not something you would expect to use for medical research. It is about the size of half a football pitch, uses superconducting radiofrequency accelerator technology, and produces continuous laser power of up to 10 kW. Unwieldy and costly the technology may be, but scientists at the US Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab), Newport News, VA, have used the FEL to develop laser eye surgery, study proteins and, most recently, burn fat.
