Foetal dosimetry: could do better
Imaging can play an important role in confirming suspected arterial blockages in the lung. But detecting a life-threatening pulmonary embolism (PE) in a pregnant patient presents doctors with a dilemma. The two most favoured techniques for PE detection both involve ionizing radiation, which could harm the developing baby. Yet few practitioners appear to know what foetal dose each scan delivers, or which technique is likely to pose less risk to the unborn child.
