Special report: nanotechnology in medicine

In the biomedical arena, nanoparticles are the subject of fast-moving development efforts in areas like drug delivery, diagnostic imaging and the treatment of cancer (see "Special report: magnetic nanoparticles" and "Nanoparticles enhance ultrasound signals" on medicalphysicsweb). Those efforts moved forward on a number of new fronts in recent weeks with the publication of research showing how nanoparticles ramp the effectiveness of photodynamic treatment of brain cancer, while fullerene nanostructures can reduce the side effects of radiation therapy as efficiently as traditional drugs. Equally significant, researchers in Europe are evaluating ways to exploit carbon nanotubes for tumour destruction via hyperthermia and targeted drug delivery.
