Radiobiology: unravelling the complexity
Much of radiation-therapy R&D currently focuses on delivering the dose as accurately as possible. There are many sophisticated enabling technologies in the mix, including computer-controlled linear accelerators, 3D treatment-planning systems and functional imaging techniques. Yet this is only part of the story when it comes to successful cancer treatment. The pattern of dose delivery and type of radiation used, as well as the timescale of the treatment, are also critical parameters.
