IGRT: you ain't seen nothing yet
Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) is being touted as the most exciting development in radiotherapy since IMRT. It's hard to argue with that. The ability to scan patients immediately prior to irradiation presents many possibilities for improving treatment accuracy and effectiveness. The question is: how long will it be before patients actually feel the benefits? Marketing claims of the major equipment manufacturers notwithstanding, the researchers working to turn IGRT into a practical treatment modality feel that much more work is needed before significant improvements in patient survival are seen.
