Foetal safety: time for a rethink?
What constitutes a safe exposure to electric and magnetic fields? It's a contentious question, with hard facts about the possible health risks in short supply. Current European exposure limits are based on calculations and modelling of normal adults. Now, however, a new model of a pregnant woman developed by scientists in Austria shows that induced currents in the foetus considerably exceed the basic restrictions set down by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).
