Seeing tumours in a new light
While doctors diagnose and treat thousands of tumours every day, clinical knowledge of the inner workings of these structures is nowhere near complete. Now, optical interrogation is poised to reveal some of the missing pieces of the puzzle. That's the claim of scientists at Duke University Medical Center (Durham, NC) who are pioneering the use of optical computed tomography (optical-CT) and optical-emission computed tomography (optical-ECT) to obtain unique 3D images of microvasculature and gene expression in tumours (Phys. Med. Biol. 52 2035).
