Ultrasound illuminates cardiac perfusion
Myocardial perfusion, the blood flow in the heart muscle, is a sensitive marker of coronary artery disease. Perfusion is traditionally assessed using a nuclear stress test, in which a patient is injected with a radioisotope and a gamma camera used to image blood flow while the heart is stressed. But although nuclear stress tests are widely employed - about 8 million such procedures are performed annually in the US - the technique is not without its downsides.
