Thinking outside the box on MRI
MRI is one of the most promising techniques available for spotting early-stage cancer - though current instrumentation requirements make it too expensive to be used for screening. According to Michael Garwood, a professor of MR research at the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis, MN), what's needed is a radical rethink of how MRI is performed. Garwood is working towards making low-cost, portable MRI a reality, and his efforts were recently recognized by the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) with its annual Gold Medal award.
