Optics probes pancreatic disease
Early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is notoriously difficult. By the time malignancy is confirmed, it is typically too late to contemplate surgery. As a consequence, the survival rate is woefully low – well over 90% of patients will die within five years of diagnosis. Optical spectroscopy has the potential to improve this scenario, according to researchers at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI).
