CAD weighs up its own evidence
The increasing digitization of medical imaging has created a ready market for computer-aided-detection (CAD) packages. Sold as a "second pair of eyes", CAD systems use pattern-recognition algorithms to flag up suspect findings on screen. At its best, CAD should act as a diagnostic safety net, preventing subtle signs of abnormality from being overlooked. But if the software is not sufficiently smart, then doctors can waste considerable time double-checking false alarms.
