Realization of the "optical biopsy" - a measurement technique that can provide automated, non-invasive, real-time diagnosis of tissue lesions - is a longstanding goal in the field of skin-cancer diagnostics. One possibility is Raman spectroscopy, which can discern the slight biochemical changes associated with malignant transformation and, as such, correlate measured data with pathological state.
