NIR tool probes bird brains
Songbirds have become an important model for studying vocal communication and acoustic processing, owing to their ability to produce and recognize complex sounds. However, given the tiny size of study subjects, the non-invasive investigation of brain activity is a considerable challenge. A paper in Phys. Med. Biol. reveals how an optical imaging method based on near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) could play a key role in future studies.
