The Elekta Virtual Clinic was initially designed as an internal training aid. However, following requests from the clinical community, the equipment vendor is making the platform available for general view.
The clinic enables the user to follow the course of radiation therapy for a patient undergoing lung treatment - from initial consultation, treatment planning and radiation treatment, all the way through to completion in the MOSAIQ patient management system.
Alternatively, it is possible to "fly over" and zoom in to find out more about specific treatment tools, such as Elekta Synergy and Leksell Gamma Knife. Users can also view clinical videos as well as case studies and treatment-protocol papers.
Further functionality, including a focus on Elekta's new volumetric intensity-modulated arc therapy (VMAT), will be incorporated in a future release of the Virtual Clinic.
• Elekta today received 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration for its VMAT technology. The company will introduce VMAT as an option for its Synergy digital linear accelerator.
