Over the summer, the two parties will negotiate a definitive purchase agreement. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter, at which time the current distribution agreement will cease.

TomoTherapy's Hi.Art radiotherapy system has emerged as an increasingly popular method of IMRT delivery in the past few years. The core technology - known as helical tomotherapy - makes use of a large number of beam projections and helical delivery to produce an extremely high conformation of the dose distribution to complex targets.

Back in April, TomoTherapy announced its intention to acquire Chengdu Twin Peak Accelerator Technology, a privately held linear-accelerator manufacturer headquartered in Chengdu, China.

At the time, Fred Robertson, CEO of TomoTherapy, noted: "The acquisition of Twin Peak represents a substantial advance in our ability to control the quality and features of our products. This is also a piece of our longer-term strategy of reducing the cost of the Hi.Art treatment system to improve margins."
