Joined up approach to marker-free gating
Most methods of gated radiotherapy, where the beam is only switched on when the target moves into the frame, use implanted markers to monitor tumour location. This invasive approach causes problems in the lungs because of the risk of pneumothorax. Yet this is exactly where gated radiotherapy could make a real difference, given the large effect of respiratory motion on lung tumours.
