X-ray mammography is associated with a risk of radiation-induced carcinogenesis and requires careful dosimetry, with verification of the mean dose to glandular breast tissues a key part of the quality control process. As direct estimation of breast dose is challenging, current dosimetry protocols rely on conversion factors that relate this mean glandular dose (MGD) to the incident air kerma at the breast surface.
