Real-time dosimetry for radioactive seeds
Transperineal interstitial permanent prostate brachytherapy, in which radiotherapy is delivered from within the gland, helps minimize damage to adjacent organs. However, once the radioactive seeds are in place, that's it. Seed withdrawal or repositioning to eliminate dose "hot spots" or "cold spots" in the target tumour is virtually out of the question. Similarly, inadvertent overdosing of adjacent organs-at-risk, such as the urethra, cannot be corrected.
