PET delves deeper into hypoxia
When cancer treatment fails, the finger of blame is often pointed at radioresistant, oxygen-starved cells. One option is to administer toxic drugs that preferentially kill these hypoxic cells. Another may be to blast such cells with an extra dose of X-ray radiation – assuming that they can be identified. However, because some regions of tissue are only hypoxic temporarily, this may not necessarily be the right course of action.
