MRI monitors radiotherapy effects
Patients undergoing intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for prostate cancer are generally followed up with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) measurements to assess treatment response. An increase in serum PSA could indicate treatment failure or cancer recurrence. However, nearly one third of patients experience at least one temporary rise in PSA after radiation ‐ possibly due to late death of epithelial cells or inflammation – about half of whom will not develop cancer recurrence. As such, there's a clear need for a more reliable indicator of radiotherapy outcome.
