HIFU tackles head-and-neck disease
High-intensity focused-ultrasound (HIFU) provides non-invasive therapy for a range of diseases. The technique, which uses focused beams of ultrasound to heat up and destroy unwanted cells, is currently employed to treat uterine fibroids, bone metastases and prostate cancer, and is under development for a range of other indications. French ultrasound specialist Theraclion, for example, is developing a HIFU system tailored to treat disease of the parathyroid glands. And the Paris-based firm is gearing up for a major European launch early next year.
