A closer look at bubble-enhanced HIFU
Therapeutic ultrasound techniques such as high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) employ focused acoustic radiation to heat up and destroy unwanted tissue. Gas bubbles within the bloodstream will oscillate strongly under such an applied acoustic field, increasing the heating effect of the ultrasound beam. This effect can be exploited to enhance ultrasound treatments – achieving the same biological effects with less acoustic pressure or shorter treatment times.
