Protons promise imaging accuracy
Unlike X-rays, therapeutic protons stop abruptly in their intended target, largely sparing what lies behind. A small margin of healthy tissue will usually be included in the treatment window to account for planning errors. This margin must be as small as possible in tumours that are close to critical structures. However, if the energetic protons are stopped too soon, the efficacy of treatment will be compromised.
