RSD introduces breathing phantom system Dec 10, 2007

Radiology Support Devices (RSD), a global leader of anthropomorphic phantoms and related products for Radiology, Radiation Therapy and Nuclear Medicine announced its new Breathing Phantom at the 49th annual ASTRO meeting.

"We are very pleased to unveil our new Breathing Phantom at this years ASTRO meeting" said Matthew Alderson, President of RSD. ”Ultimately patients will benefit as the Breathing Phantom helps compensate for tumor motion without significantly irradiating the surrounding normal tissue.”

The breathing phantom torso mannequin is a complex plastic simulation of a human torso including lungs, ribcage/chest-wall bone, skin and sub-dermis, and an independently movable tumor within one of the lung volumes.

Under the programmed application of increasing and decreasing air pressure, the phantom lungs fill and empty air to replicate human lung function. Chest movement of one cm and more can be programmed. As the lungs expand and contract, the simulated ribcage bones move as does the anterior and anterio-lateral skin surface.

Under the independently programmed application of air pressure to one of several industry standard pneumatic motion actuators, target motion within one lung is accomplished. The materials and composition of the phantom are devised to be a realistic simulation of the physical form of a human thorax and to the radiological image properties.
